clamshell vs orange peel grab

Clamshell grabs and orange peel grabs are both widely used hydraulic or mechanical attachments for handling bulk materials, but they differ in structure, working principle, and ideal applications.A clamshell grab usually consists of two large, smooth or slightly ribbed shells hinged at the top. When the grab closes, the two shells move toward each other like a clamshell, enclosing the material. The interior surfaces are relatively flat or gently curved, which allows the grab to hold fine or moderately coarse materials with minimal spillage. Clamshell grabs are especially suitable for handling loose bulk products such as sand, grain, fertilizers, coal fines, and other free‑flowing materials. They are commonly used in ports, river terminals, and storage yards for loading and unloading ships, trucks, and hoppers.Because the clamshell grab has only two main shells, it provides a relatively large internal volume. This makes it efficient for high‑capacity operations where cycle time and throughput are important. The smooth shell design also reduces damage to delicate cargo, which is useful when handling some agricultural commodities or other materials that should not be excessively crushed. However, clamshell grabs are less effective when dealing with irregular, interlocking, or very coarse materials such as scrap metal, demolition waste, or large rocks. In these cases, the two shells may not penetrate the pile deeply enough, leading to low filling rates and poor productivity.An orange peel grab, by contrast, is composed of multiple curved tines or “petals,” typically four to eight, that open and close around the material. When the grab closes, the tines penetrate into the pile from several directions, gripping the load in a more three‑dimensional manner. This configuration provides excellent engagement with irregular or tangled materials, making orange peel grabs ideal for handling scrap metal, mixed waste, construction debris, and rough stones. The pointed or sharpened tine tips can dig into compacted heaps and hook onto individual pieces, ensuring a high filling degree even with difficult materials.Although orange peel grabs are exceptional for coarse and irregular loads, they are not optimal for very fine or free‑flowing materials. The spaces between the tines allow small particles to escape, leading to significant losses and contamination of the working area. For this reason, they are rarely used for fine coal, sand, or similar products unless special covers or overlapping tine designs are employed.In terms of selection, the main criteria are material characteristics, required capacity, and working environment. For uniform, free‑flowing bulk commodities where minimal spillage and high volume per cycle are desired, a clamshell grab is usually the better choice. For heavy, irregular, or interlocked materials where penetration and gripping force are more important than perfect containment, an orange peel grab offers superior performance. Proper matching of grab type to the handled material improves safety, efficiency, and operating costs in lifting and bulk‑handling operations.
