The ASD tugboat is equipped with specialized deck machinery designed to support safe, efficient towing operations in both harbor and offshore environments. Its layout is compact but robust, allowing the tug to handle demanding maneuvers and high bollard pull while maintaining clear working areas for the crew.At the bow, a heavy‑duty towing winch is typically installed on the centerline. This winch is often a double‑drum or single‑drum type with render‑recovery capability, enabling precise control of towline tension in dynamic conditions. The drum is spooled with high‑strength synthetic rope or steel wire, selected according to the tug’s bollard pull and the operating area. The winch features automatic tension control, warping heads for handling lines, and local as well as remote controls from the wheelhouse, ensuring quick response during escort, ship‑handling, and harbor towage.A towing staple or fairlead is positioned forward of the winch to guide the towline and maintain optimal lead angles. This component is engineered for high loads and smooth line handling, often incorporating low‑friction liners. On the stern, a towing hook or an aft winch may be installed for conventional towing. The towing hook is fitted with a quick‑release mechanism operable from both deck and wheelhouse, allowing the crew to instantly let go the tow in emergency situations. When an aft winch is fitted, it is usually aligned with a stern roller or fairlead to minimize chafing and friction on the line.Throughout the working deck, multiple sets of mooring bitts, bollards, and closed chocks are welded into the structure. These provide secure points for mooring and for temporary securing of towing lines and messenger ropes. The arrangement is symmetrical to accommodate port and starboard operations and to give flexibility when working alongside different types and sizes of vessels.Fendering is a key part of deck equipment on ASD tugs. Heavy‑duty cylindrical and “W‑type” fenders are fitted around the bow and sides, with additional “D‑type” or block fenders along the sheer strake and transom. This fendering system absorbs impact and protects both the tug and assisted vessels during pushing, indirect towing, and escort work. The bow area is often configured for push‑pull operations, with reinforced fendering and a clear deck to give good visibility and freedom of movement.Safety and utility equipment is integrated into the deck layout. This includes lifebuoys, fire hoses and hydrants, emergency escape routes, and non‑slip deck surfacing. Access ladders, handrails, and guardrails are provided around all working areas. A deck crane or davit may be installed to handle stores, spare parts, and small craft, while hose handling equipment can be fitted on tugs engaged in tanker berthing or offshore terminal work.All deck machinery is designed for durability in a harsh marine environment, with corrosion‑resistant materials, robust foundations, and protected control systems. The arrangement supports the ASD tug’s primary roles of ship‑handling, escorting, and offshore support, while maintaining safe, efficient operations for the crew in a compact and highly maneuverable vessel.
