Dredging Cost Calculation Guide & Template
1. Document Overview
Purpose: This guide details the complete methodology for calculating total dredging costs, applicable to Cutter Suction Dredgers (CSD) and other dredging vessels, covering capital investment, operational expenses, additional costs and unit volume cost accounting. It is designed for project budgeting, procurement analysis and cost optimization for global dredging projects.
Applicable Scope: Inland river dredging, port construction, land reclamation, coastal dredging, capital dredging projects; small, medium and large-scale CSDs (80-8000m³/h capacity).
2. Core Cost Classification & Total Cost Formula
Total Dredging Cost = Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) + Operational Expenditure (OPEX) + Additional Costs
2.1 Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) – One-Time Investment
Refers to upfront, non-recurring costs related to equipment acquisition, leasing and project preparation, amortized over the project/service life.
Dredger Purchase/Leasing Cost: The largest proportion of CAPEX, determined by dredger capacity, power type, customization, classification society certification and self-propelled/non-self-propelled design.
Small CSD (80-800m³/h): $50,000 – $150,000
Medium CSD (1000-3500m³/h): CNY 12M – CNY 100M
Large CSD (3500-8000m³/h): CNY 50M – Over $300M
Leasing Cost: 0.5% – 1% of equipment purchase price per month
Annual Depreciation (for purchased vessels):
Classification & Certification Fees: 2% – 5% of equipment purchase price
Port & Infrastructure Preparation Fees: 5% – 10% of total CAPEX
2.2 Operational Expenditure (OPEX) – Recurring Daily Costs
Core ongoing costs during dredging operations, usually calculated by cost per hour or cost per cubic meter (m³), accounting for 60%-80% of total project costs.
2.2.1 Energy Cost (30%-50% of OPEX, Largest Proportion)
Diesel Power:
Electric/Shore Power:
LNG/Methanol Dual Fuel: 30%-40% lower than pure diesel fuel cost, calculated based on actual fuel consumption and unit price
2.2.2 Labor Cost

2.2.3 Maintenance & Spare Parts Cost
Annual Maintenance Fee: 5% – 10% of dredger purchase price

2.2.4 Total OPEX per Cubic Meter
OPEX per m³ = Energy Cost per m³ + Labor Cost per m³ + Maintenance Cost per m³
2.3 Additional Costs
Transportation & Installation Cost: 5% – 20% of equipment price (modular CSD saves 20% on transport costs)
Taxes & Tariffs: 5% – 15% of total CAPEX + OPEX, varies by country/region
Environmental & Compliance Fees: 2% – 8% of total OPEX (carbon tax, discharge fees, etc.)
Insurance & Project Management Cost: 1% – 3% of total investment per year
Crew Training & Vessel Commissioning Cost: Customized based on project scale and vessel type
3. Key Project-Level Cost Calculation
3.1 Unit Volume Cost (Core Evaluation Indicator)

3.2 Sample Calculation (Medium CSD: 2000m³/h Capacity)

4. Critical Cost Influencing Factors & Optimization Tips
Capacity Utilization: Increasing utilization from 60% to 90% reduces unit cost by 20%-30%
Power Type Selection: Full electric propulsion cuts energy cost by 30%-60% vs diesel power; LNG/methanol dual fuel reduces fuel cost by 30%-40%
Soil Condition & Discharge Distance: Hard rock/long discharge distance increases energy and maintenance costs by 20%-50%
Equipment Customization: Rational customization avoids excess premium; modular design cuts transport and installation costs
Project Cycle: Long-term large-scale projects favor large CSDs for lower unit cost; short-term small projects suit modular small CSDs
