2 Factors Affecting Cutter Suction Dredger Prices

2.1 Size and Capacity

CSDs are categorized by discharge pipe diameter (8–24 inches, typically applicable to small vessels and not an accurate indicator of overall performance) and output (80–8000 m³/h):

Small CSDs (80–800 m³/h): Starting at $50,000–$150,000, suitable for inland waterways and small-scale projects.

Medium CSDs (1000–3500 m³/h): CNY 12 million – CNY 100 million, ideal for river and port maintenance.

Large CSDs (3500–8000 m³/h): CNY 50 million – CNY 300 million, designed for deep-sea and large-scale reclamation projects.

For example, the largest CSD exported from China to date (6500 m³/h), mentioned above, was sold for over $120 million and used for Capital Dredging Projects. However, given current market conditions, this price would not even cover the cost of building an identical vessel today.

2.2 Power and Engine Type

Traditional power configurations: For instance, diesel engines (200–30,000 kW) cost 10–20% more than electric motors (30–75 kW) and have higher fuel consumption. Typical case: Royal IHC’s “Spartacus” (the world’s first LNG dual-fuel large CSD), with a single-shaft pump power of 4.5 MW, dredging depth of 45 m, and flow rate of 6000 m³/h, suitable for ultra-deep-water infrastructure.

Full electric propulsion prices are relatively predictable, while dual-fuel propulsion costs are currently difficult to estimate due to varying design specifications.

2.3 Customization

Q:  Why a Chinese new build CSD650 cost USD1.2 + million , but  an USED IHC Beaver 650 cost Euro 8,600,000?

A:  This has to start from the design phase—did you go through formal classification society plan approval? A genuine CSD requires rigorous calculations regarding structural stability, hull strength, and equipment compatibility, even if it's not fully classed.

After plan approval, did you use marine-grade steel plates for procurement? Were marine-certified equipment installed? Was construction supervised by the classification society? And most importantly, was the vessel certificate successfully obtained?

Of course, ships from IHC or Damen command a premium price
