Classification System of Modern Offshore Engineering Vessels & Special Operation Vessels

Category 1: Offshore Oil & Gas Support Vessels (OSV)

Platform Supply Vessel (PSV)

Features: Spacious deck, deadweight ≤ 5,000 tons; equipped with external fire-fighting and emergency standby capabilities; highly adaptable to various platforms.Applications: Delivering fuel, fresh water, drilling mud, building materials and supplies to offshore oil and gas platforms; providing emergency support and safety standby.


Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessel (AHTS)

Features: Three-in-one functions (towing, anchor handling, supply); equipped with heavy-duty winches and shark jaws; open stern, strong dynamic positioning.Applications: Ocean towing and anchoring of drilling platforms; deep-water material transportation; offshore emergency rescue.

Diving Support Vessel / ROV Operation Vessel

Features: Carries ROV, diving chambers and dedicated work deck; precise positioning, excellent deep-water adaptability.Applications: Subsea pipeline inspection, underwater repair, salvage; deep-water wellhead operation and offshore engineering support.


Category 2: Heavy Offshore Engineering Operation Vessels


Floating Crane  (Crane Barge)

Features: Self-propelled or non-self-propelled; lifting capacity from hundreds to thousands of tons; large vessels up to 70,000–80,000 tons displacement.Applications: Port construction, platform module lifting, heavy cargo handling; underwater salvage and offshore emergency response.

Piling Barge (Pile Driving Vessel)

Features: Steel box-type non-self-propelled hull; adjustable pitching piling frame; GPS and hydraulic control for high precision.Applications: Underwater piling for bridges, wharves, dams and offshore wind turbine foundations.

Pipe-laying Vessel

Features: Equipped with stinger, tensioners and welding stations; continuous pipe-laying; dynamic positioning for rough seas.Applications: Laying and burying subsea oil/gas pipelines and water pipelines.


Cable-laying Vessel

Features: Precise cable laying, burial and repair; low-speed stability, fine maneuvering control.Applications: Laying subsea power cables and communication optical cables; offshore wind farm grid connection and cross-sea communication projects.


Semi-submersible Barge

Features: Submerges and surfaces by ballast water; ultra-high load capacity, excellent stability.Applications: Transporting platform modules, hull sections, wind turbine jackets and large offshore structures.


Deck Barge (Non-self-propelled & Self-propelled)

Features: Box-type hull; full high-strength load deck; shallow draft, good stability; self-propelled version can navigate independently.Applications: Transporting heavy offshore cargo and engineering materials; convertible into construction or auxiliary operation platforms.

Reef Blasting Vessel

Features: Equipped with drilling and blasting devices; precise positioning, safe and controllable operation.Applications: Breaking and removing reefs in waterways and harbor basins to ensure dredging and navigation.

Rock Dumping Vessel

Features: High deck load capacity, accurate dumping; mostly converted from deck barges.Applications: Rock dumping for wharf foundation beds, slope protection, embankment reinforcement and subsea pipeline backfilling.



Jack-up Operation Platform(SEWOPs - Self-Elevating Workover Platforms )

Features: Equipped with liftable legs, can be elevated above water; high stability and wave resistance; can carry cranes or drilling rigs.Applications: Offshore wind turbine installation, maintenance, exploration, wellhead operation and temporary offshore workstations.


Category 3: Dredging Vessels


Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger

Features: Self-propelled, self-loading, operates under way; no channel closure, high mobility.Applications: Waterway dredging, harbor basin maintenance, reclamation.

Cutter Suction Dredger

Features: Continuous excavation, long-distance slurry delivery; high efficiency, suitable for hard soil.Applications: Large-scale land reclamation, waterway excavation, harbor deepening.


Grab / Backhoe Dredger

Features: Mechanical excavation, suitable for hard soil and gravel; precise operation in shallow water.Applications: Wharf front dredging, reef and construction waste removal, shallow water dredging.

Bucket Chain Dredger

Features: Smooth trench, ultra-high precision; suitable for most soils except rock.Applications: High-precision waterway dredging, hydraulic foundation excavation, regular trench construction.

 

Category 4: Offshore Wind Farm Special Vessels


Wind Turbine Installation Vessel (WTIV)

Features: Jack-up legs, elevated operation; equipped with heavy cranes, ultra-stable positioning.Applications: Installation of wind turbine foundations, towers, nacelles and blades.


Service Operation Vessel (SOV)

Features: Good seakeeping, low-speed precise berthing; accommodation and night berthing available.Applications: Daily wind farm inspection, equipment maintenance, technician and spare parts delivery.


Wind Power Special Transport Vessel

Features: Wide deck, professional lashing system; suitable for extra-long and oversized components.Applications: Ocean transportation of wind turbine blades, towers, jackets and monopiles.


Category 5: Marine Scientific Research & Survey Vessels


Marine Scientific Research Vessel

Features: Complete laboratories, full detection equipment; long endurance, good seaworthiness.Applications: Marine hydrological, geological, biological and meteorological surveys and scientific research.


Geophysical Survey Vessel

Features: Equipped with air-gun sources and signal receivers; large detection depth, high precision.Applications: Subsea oil and gas exploration, seabed geological structure detection.


Ocean Drilling Vessel

Features: Ultra-deep water drilling capability; world-class equipment (e.g. Mengxiang).Applications: Deep-sea core sampling, crustal structure research, seabed resource exploration.

 

Category 6: Port & Waterway Working Vessels


Tugboat

Features: High power, strong traction, flexible maneuvering.Applications: Assisting large ships in berthing/unberthing, offshore towing, emergency pushing.


Pilot Boat

Features: Small and flexible, good wave resistance, safe boarding.Applications: Transporting pilots to/from large ships to ensure safe port entry/exit.

Icebreaking Vessel 

Features: Strong hull, powerful engine; crushes ice to open channels.Applications: Ice channel opening in polar/winter regions, port navigation assurance.


Firefighting Boat

Features: Multiple high-power water cannons, strong fire-fighting system; some with oil spill treatment.Applications: Port and ship fire fighting, offshore emergency rescue.
